Welcome to the Hotel California, such a lovely place, such a lovely face — in Mexico?
It turns out there is an 11 room hotel in Todos Santos, Mexico that has been misleading visitors into believing their establishment actually helped serve as inspiration for the 1976 hit song by the Eagles. The hotel claims on their website to have no affiliation with the rock band, however still identifies coincidental similarities the hotel shares with the song.
The artists are not happy. Once the band got word that the hotel was selling merchandise adorned with “Hotel California” branding, they filed their own trademark application for merchandise use of the words “Hotel California”, and claim they have been selling merchandise under this name since 1977. The band quickly filed suit against the hotel in May of 2017.
